A massive recreation venue in Carson, which will also boast sports and academic facilities, has moved a little closer to becoming a reality.
The LA County Board of Supervisors has approved a lease with developer Plentitude Holdings to build The Creek at Dominguez Hills, finishing a plan to replace the county-owned Victoria Golf Course in Carson. Plentitude operates the golf course.
“The redevelopment of Victoria Golf Course will be transformative for the City of Carson, the South Bay, and the region at-large,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who authored the motion to go forward with the development, said in a press release.
The property’s redevelopment will come in two phases. The first will be creating the sports and academic center, estimated to cost about $60 million. Construction of all facilities is projected to be complete in three years, according to county documents.
Last year, the board approved a lease for the Carol Kimmelman Athletic and Academic Campus, which will be a tennis center operated by United States Tennis Association Foundation, a sports field and a 25,000 square foot youth STEM learning center operated by the Tiger Woods Foundation on the northern 84 acres of the golf course site. A soccer program will be held there, administered by AEG Worldwide and the L.A. Galaxy.
The tenant for that portion of the property, the Kimmelman Family Foundation, then proposed the second part of the project, The Creek at Dominguez Hills.
That development, on the southern 94 acres of the site, will include more than a half-million square feet of retail and restaurant space, a driving range, a 7-acre golf facility, a multi-use sports complex, a sky diving facility, an outdoor adventure park, a nearly 7-acre public park, and a sports health and wellness building.
County officials announced in 2017 that they planned to turn the under-performing 178-acre Victoria Golf Course into a recreation center, entering negotiations with the Kimmelman Family Foundation.
The development looks to create 750 permanent jobs, up from the current 11 golf course operations jobs, according to a press release. County officials also said they expect the project to generate revenue for its Department of Parks and Recreation, which will then be reinvested in park programs in underserved areas.
