Things haven't often been pretty for the Patriots, but they're learning to win ugly in New England.
In a game in which many felt the Pats would be overmatched, they came away with a 23-17 victory over the Ravens and reigning league MVP Lamar Jackson on "Sunday Night Footbal."
The keys for New England were simple: establish the run, take don't turn the ball over and limit big plays from Jackson. They got a lot of help accomplishing that last goal from mother nature as it began to downpour late in the second half, with Baltimore suffering a couple of drive-killing botched snaps.
Cam Newton wasn't necessarily spectacular, but the former MVP took care of the ball, completing 13 of 17 passes for 118 yards and a TD while adding 21 yards and a TD on the ground. Running back Damien Harris had a game-high 22 carries for 121 yards rushing, and Rex Burkhead added 31 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving with a pair of touchdown catches.
Burkead's second TD came on a trick play in the second quarter as wide receiver Jakobi Meyers threw what might have been the prettiest pass of the night, a 24-yard floater to Burkhead in the back of the end zone, giving New England a 13-10 lead. Meyers finished the game with five catches for 59 yards.
Jackson had a solid overall night: 24-of-34 passing for 248 yards and two TDs, along with 55 yards rushing. However, he made a crucial in the final seconds of the first half as he was picked of by J.C. Jackson, who leads the NFL with six interceptions on the season. Baltimore was well within Justin Tucker's field goal range, but instead didn't get any points on the drive and trailed 13-10 at halftime.
New England got the ball to start the second half and marched right down the field, taking a 20-10 lead on a designed run for Newton, who punched it in from 4 yards out for his ninth rushing TD of the year.
On the ensuing Baltimore possession, the Ravens got the ball to their 48-yard line and attempted to convert a fourth and 1, but an errant snap gave the ball to New England at the Baltimore 37-yard line. The Patriots tacked on a field goal to make it 23-10.
The Ravens bounced back on the following drive as Jackson delivered a perfect 18-yard pass to Willie Snead IV for the duo's second TD hookup of the night, making it 23-17 with 8 seconds left in the third quarter.
That's when the downpour came, stalling out both offenses. Both teams combined to punt on the first five possessions of the fourth quarter. The Ravens got the ball back at their 17-yard line for one final chance to take the lead with 1:05 remaining, but that's when the rain came down the hardest. On fourth and 6, Jackson threw a would-be first down to J.K. Dobbins, but even with nobody near him the rookie running back couldn't hang on to the ball, ending the game.
With the win, the Patriots (4-5) are now two games behind the Dolphins and 2.5 behind the Bills in the AFC East. The Ravens (6-3) fall three games behind the Steelers in the AFC North and are tied with the Browns.

11:15 p.m. — FINAL: Patriots 23, Ravens 17. Jackson's pass on fourth and 6 is dropped in the heavy downpour. Newton kneels to end the game.
11:12 p.m. — Patriots punt. Ravens get it at their 17-yard line with 1:05 remaining, no timeouts.

11:01 p.m. — Ravens punt. Another bad snap set Baltimore way behind the chains and they can't convert on third and 13. New England takes over at its 18-yard line with 4:20 to play.
10:54 p.m. — Patriots punt. New England moves the chains a couple of time and is at least able to flip the field back. Baltimore takes over at its 20-yard line, 7:09 left to play in regulation.
10:44 p.m. — Ravens go three-and-out. Baltimore can't get much going either as Jackson's pass to Snead on third and 12 comes up a couple yards short. Ravens elect to punt and New England takes over at its 4-yard line after a holding penalty moves it half the distance to the goal, 11:25 left in the fourth quarter.
10:38 p.m. — Patriots go three-and-out. Conditions continue to get uglier and New England can't get anything going. Baltimore takes over at its 26-yard line, 13:14 to go in the fourth quarter.
10:35 p.m. — END OF 3Q: Patriots 23, Ravens 17. New England has it, second and 12 at its 23-yard line to start the fourth quarter.
10:32 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN, RAVENS. Jackson goes over the middle to Snead for an 18-yard TD to cut it to 23-17 with 8 seconds left in the third quarter.
