After winning the first set 25-17, the Chanticleers looked ready to take the second set as they jumped out to a quick 10-3 advantage. Troy battled back and, down 18-9, scored seven unanswered points to close the gap to 18-16. Following a timeout, Coastal scored four-straight points powered by a pair of kills and a service ace by Anett Nemeth to open a 22-16 lead. The Trojans continued to battle and forced the Chants to take a timeout as Troy closed to within two points at 23-21. Coastal took a 24-21 lead on a service error by Alison Siersma but failed to capitalize on three set-points and Troy closed the match with a five-point swing to take the 26-24 victory with a kill by Cheyenne Hayes.
The third set saw the teams battle back and forth with neither team building more than a three-point lead until late in the set. Leading 20-18, Troy opened a 23-18 lead on kills by Tori Hester and Julia Brooks and an attack error by Coastal's Jelena Prolic. Troy took a 24-21 lead on another kill by Hester but Coastal was able to hold off a pair of set-points on kills by Nemeth and Prolic. Amara Anderson gave Troy the win and the 2-1 lead in the match with a kill.
Coastal Carolina, which had only lost two sets in its previous six victories, came out strong in the fourth set and built a 19-11 lead. Troy scored four-straight points to close the gap to 19-15, but the Chants would put the set away by scoring six of the final seven points to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.
The teams traded points to begin the fifth set and the score was tied six times before Coastal opened a 9-7 lead with three unanswered points to force a Troy timeout. The Trojans scored three of the next four points to again tie the set at 10-10. After trading points once again, Coastal's Ilse Sinnige gave the Chanticleers a 14-12 advantage with a kill and forced Troy head coach Josh Lauer to call his final timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, Coastal's Prolic and Brigitta Petrenko had attack errors that tied the match at 14-14. Troy's Hester gave Coastal a 15-14 lead with an attack error before senior Ani Bozdeva gave the Chants the victory with a kill to keep the Chanticleers undefeated.
Bozdeva led a balanced offensive attack for the Chanticleers with 18 kills, while Nemeth and Prolic added 17 and 13 kills, respectively. Petrenko set the offense by dishing out a season-high 49 set assists. Defensively, Coastal's Sinnige had six blocks and Prolic added a team-high 22 digs.
Troy was led offensively by Hayes' 21 kills and Anderson's 39 set assists. Hayes also paced the defensive effort with 39 digs and Julia Brooks posted seven blocks.
Coastal (8-0, 8-0 SBC) and Troy (4-3, 4-3 SBC) will play the third match of the Sun Belt series on Friday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. ET. Fans attending the match at the HTC Center will enter only through gate one and exit only through gate two. Gates three and four will be closed. Coastal Carolina is allowing a limited capacity of 150 fans into the match and all fans will be asked to wear face coverings at all times and maintain physical distancing in the seating area and while entering and exiting the arena. There will be no concessions during the match.
