Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers kept things rolling after their big victory over the Green Bay Packers last week, as they downed the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday by a score of 45-20. While the Buccaneers were in the headlines coming into this matchup because they reportedly agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Antonio Brown on a one-year deal, they certainly did not need him this week.
Brady completed 33 of 45 passes for 369 yards, four touchdowns and rushed for another score. Slot receiver Scotty Miller led the team in receiving, as he caught six passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Brady certainly wasn't scared to spread the wealth around either, as he completed passes to nine different receivers and all four of his touchdowns went to different wideouts as well.
As for the Raiders, their offense certainly wasn't as potent as it was during their Week 5 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. After Derek Carr led a touchdown drive on the Raiders' first drive of the game, it took them until the second half to score their next touchdown. They just weren't consistent enough to keep up with the firepower Brady had on the other sideline.
Why the Buccaneers won
Brady certainly was the main reason Tampa Bay won on Sunday, as he accounted for five total touchdowns. Still, I think you have to give credit to this wide receiving corps -- which is coming along as the season progresses. Chris Godwin was seemingly always available, as he caught nine passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. Rob Gronkowski also built on his strong performance last week and caught five passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. Even Leonard Fournette got involved in the passing game and caught six passes for 47 yards. You'd like to see Mike Evans get more touches, as he caught just two passes for 37 yards on Sunday, but sometimes it can be hard with so many mouths to feed. It certainly will be interesting to see what happens when Brown makes his Bucs debut in a few weeks.
Why the Raiders lost
The Raiders lone touchdown in the first half came on their first drive of the game, and they found the end zone just one more time -- a Darren Waller touchdown that came in the third quarter. Much credit can certainly be attributed to the Buccaneers defense, but is it not the offense's job to find mismatches and attack? Whether it was runs, screen passes or shots downfield, the Raiders struggled to find success in any of those facets consistently. Carr has plenty of young weapons to work with in the passing game, but this team went 5 of 13 on third downs. Additionally, the run game was held in check all game, as Josh Jacobs rushed for just 17 yards on 10 carries. This team has plenty of potential, but the Buccaneers proved they were more talented on both sides of the ball and were riding a bigger wave of momentum.
Turning point
After Daniel Carlson hit a 36-yard field goal to cut the lead to four points early in the fourth quarter. It was time for the Buccaneers to respond. They hadn't scored a touchdown in the second half, but that's exactly what Brady and Co. accomplished to cap off an 11-play, 67-yard drive. Brady hit Godwin in stride in the end zone, and it was a throw that extended the Bucs' lead to 11 points.
On the Raiders' first play of their next possession, Carr's pass was tipped and intercepted by rookie Antoine Winfield Jr. The Buccaneers scored another touchdown to put this game on ice just two plays later.
Play of the game
This was just ridiculous. It's unfair that you can be 43-years-old and still be able to throw the ball like this. Not only did the ball travel through the air 40-plus yards, but Brady hit Miller just a few feet from the back left pylon in the end zone. No one could have thrown this ball better than Brady did.
The Buccaneers find themselves on a two-game win streak, but it's plays like these that speak louder than the W's themselves. Brady and the Bucs are finding their rhythm, and it's possible they just get better from here on out.
What's next
The Raiders hit the road next Sunday, as they are slated to take on the Cleveland Browns. The Browns earned win No. 5 on Sunday, with a 37-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. The Buccaneers will travel again next week to take on the New York Giants on Monday night in prime time. The Giants are coming off of a tough 22-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on "Thursday Night Football."
