The Atlanta Falcons have managed to lose some comical games this season, but few would have expected any team — even Atlanta! — to accidentally score a touchdown and end up losing because of it.

But that was exactly what happened during the Falcons’ loss to the Detroit Lions. With the ball and trailing by two, the Falcons just needed to run down the clock and stay out of the end zone to set up a last-second, game-winning field goal for Younghoe Koo.

Yet, on a first-down run, Gurley couldn’t stop his momentum and crossed the plane of the goal line as he attempted to not score. It turned out that Gurley knew he couldn’t score, and Matt Ryan reiterated that to Gurley in the huddle.

NFL Films released mic’d-up footage from Sunday’s game, and we could hear Ryan instructing Gurley, “Don’t score.”

Gurley appeared to be on the same page as Ryan too, but it didn’t matter in the end. He couldn’t stay out of the end zone, and the Lions would pull off a game-winning touchdown drive with help of that blunder.

It would be one thing if Gurley didn’t know to stay out of the end zone, but he did! And he still scored. The Falcons really do turn losing into an art form.
