The LA Rams proved they were legit against the Chicago Bears for the first Monday Night Football game from SoFi Stadium to round off Week 7.
After quickly getting the first points on the (huge Oculus video) board, the Rams won by 24-10 by putting on a defensive showcase and thanks to an impactful performance by punter Johnny Hekker.
Here’s our instant review the game:
What it means:
The Rams had an impressive bounce-back performance after their disappointing loss at the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. They appeared completely focused on rebounding and playing harder and tougher on both sides of the ball. There were many great performances including by receiver Josh Reynolds, running back Darrell Henderson, pass rusher Leonard Floyd and the Rams’ secondary.
This was a strong showing against a team that was 5-1 going into the game. The Rams are now 5-2 heading into November and are in the thick of things in the tough NFC West. The Seattle Seahawks are 5-1, the Arizona Cardinals are 5-2 along with the the Rams, and the 49ers are 4-3.
But on Monday, the Rams showed they are ready to stay in NFC playoff contention.
Higbee out:
In a surprise, Rams’ standout tight end Tyler Higbee was inactive Monday night because of a hand injury. The expectation during last week was that Higbee would be able to play against the Bears. Reserve tight end Johnny Mundt had a huge catch and run in the second quarter to set up a Sam Sloman field goal to give the Rams a 10-3 lead.
Coin streak:
The Rams have won the coin toss for the sixth straight game. They have chosen to defer each week.
Hekker impact:
Rams’ punter Johnny Hekker, once again, showed why he is one of the best in the NFL as he pinned the Bears inside their own 10-yard line five (five!) times. It dictated the field-position game and it was a huge factor for the Rams,
Burgess looks good, but gets hurt:
Rams rookie safety Terrell Burgess was very active. However, he suffered an ankle injury in the fourth quarter and the third-round pick was carted off. Hopefully, it is not serious, but it didn’t look great ...
What’s next?
The Rams play at the 3-3 Miami Dolphins on Sunday in a game that will get a lot of national attention. It will be the starting debut of Dolphins’ rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
