Young Caribbean athletes flock to Bermuda this summer as the island hosts a popular sporting championship.
As the Bermuda Union of Teachers prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Bermuda will welcome the Caribbean Union of Teachers Students’ Track and Field and Swimming Championship for the first time.
In another first, swimming will be included in the CUT Games.
According to organiser Anthony Wolffe, 300 to 400 competitors ranging from under-9 are expected.
Teams will attend from Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Nevis, St Croix, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The games are set to run on July 13 and 14 at the National Sports Centre.
The BUT, which turns 100 on February 1, 2019, is appealing for sponsorship to help cover the costs.
“This provides an opportunity for our young sportspersons to compete on an international level,” Mr Wolffe said.
“We hope people will want to get involved and support these young people.”
The run-up to the union’s centennial will include a golf tournament, a bowling tournament and a theatrical production by Patricia Nesbitt at the Earl Cameron Theatre in September, as well as a women’s high tea.
All the proceeds of the events will go towards a $100,000 fundraising target, which will be used for four scholarships.
Anyone wishing to help with sponsorship is asked to contact Mr Wolffe on CUTgames@but.bm, or through the BUT offices, 292-7270.
