While dismayed that his team did not secure maximum points against Belize at the Flora Duffy Stadium last night, Bermuda football coach Michael Findlay is convinced they can still earn Nations League promotion next month.
Bermuda wasted numerous goalscoring opportunities and missed out on a chance to climb to the top of their group and Findlay knows they need to ace their remaining two assignments against St Vincent & the Grenadines at home on November 17 and French Guiana away four days later.
“I’m obviously disappointed because we wanted three points,’’ Findlay said.
“At the end of the day does it change the dynamics of what we need to do in November? No, not really. We needed to win two football games to go through and that would have been the situation even if we had won.
“We would have had the advantage of maybe getting a draw depending on the other results but we still have to go and play two football matches in November and be successful.
“We get six points here, we’re in a position to move forward, and we have to look at November as the opportunity to win a game.”
“What we were really pleased with was the application and with some of the dynamic movement we had in the way we've been trying to play and apply ourselves, and sometimes it just doesn't come off.
“We created chances but football is about execution. It’s about scoring goals and if you don't do it you get into situations we got into tonight where we got caught.
Backed by a decent crowd of just over 800 spectators, Bermuda took the lead in the first half through Kane Crichlow but Belize levelled with a late second-half penalty and Findlay feels his side have to be more clinical
“I haven't seen the penalty call so I won’t make any comments on that but you get caught in a situation wher you end up in 1-1 draw instead of maybe a 1-0 victory or even more,” Findlay said.
“We came home very confident playing at home in front of our own fans and playing on a surface that lends itself to the way we've been trying to apply ourselves .
“I think there were large portions of the match that we were incredible dominant but again, if you don’t score goals, you don't win football matches.
“It all came down to execution. Should they have shot more? They put themselves into positions but they didn't complete the task. We created a couple of chances where I think that game could have been put away and that’s the difference between winning and losing football games.”
