Newcomer BermudAir will make economy seating a permanent fixture on its aircraft just months after launching with the intent to be an all-business class airline.
The carrier, which launched its first flights to the island in August, will operate a dual-class cabin on its Embraer E175 aircraft and no longer aim to only have business class seating, the airline shared with Travel + Leisure. The carrier will offer year-round service to Bermuda from Boston, Fort Lauderdale, and New York's Westchester County Airport.
When it first started flying, BermudAir operated with a standard 88-seat configuration on its aircraft, but only sold 44 seats for each flight. The initial plan was to convert the aircraft into a 30-seat configuration with the delivery of custom suites. However, CEO Adam Scott said the airline decided to pivot away from that idea due to “strong demand for direct, short-haul and premium flights” and will instead include a combination of economy seats and “Aisle Class” suites.
“Since launching in August, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to increase air capacity for Bermuda and serve the business and tourism needs of the island,” Scott said in a statement shared with T+L. “A dual-class cabin allows us to continue to deliver on that promise, giving our guests more options to fly with BermudAir.”
Scott added: “We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback from our guests about their experience onboard BermudAir, but guests also desire more options and flexibility. BermudAir is uniquely positioned to fill that need with our dual-class cabin.”
Both fare classes will include complimentary Wi-Fi. Each business class seat will have direct aisle access from which travelers can enjoy signature Bermuda cocktails like the Dark ‘n Stormy.
BermudAir isn’t alone in envisioning an all-business class airline. La Compagnie, which was named the best international airline by T+L readers, offers an all-business class cabin with just 76 lie-flat seats on board in a 2-2 configuration.
