Mariners rob Tigers of walk-off homer, score 5 runs in 11th inning to win - MLive.com

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers came tantalizingly close to walk-off home runs in back-to-back innings before falling to the Seattle Mariners 9-6 in 11 innings Wednesday night at Comerica Park.

The Mariners scored five runs in the 11th against Tigers reliever Daniel Norris, taking advantage of three hits, a hit batter and two walks -- one intentional, one not.

The Tigers (25-36) have split the first two games of the series with the Mariners (31-32).

Isaac Paredes was robbed of a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning when his bullet to left field was caught by Jake Fraley, who crashed against the wall and pulled the ball back onto the field. Pinch-runner Eric Haase, who had rounded second in anticipation of scoring, was doubled off at first base to send the game into extra innings.

“There was a lot to digest in that game, but that was an emotional turn of events when you think the game’s over and it turns out to be a double play,” Hinch said.

Fraley’s catch was one of three jaw-dropping defensive plays by outfielders on Wednesday. The first was by Tigers center fielder Derek Hill, who ran a long way to track down Kyle Seager’s long fly ball in the deepest part of the park. Hill injured his right shoulder on the play and had to leave the game.

Jake Rogers crushed a ball 423 feet to the right-field seats for a solo home run in the fifth. Akil Baddoo followed with a double. He scored on Robbie Grossman’s RBI single, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead against Mariners starter Chris Flexen.

Tigers starter Casey Mize cruised through five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth. After a double and single, Kyle Seager hit a mammoth homer down the right field line to tie the game at 3.

The Mariners threatened in the eighth when Jake Fraley singled and stole second. But when reliever Gregory Soto threw an errant pitch that got past catcher Jake Rogers, Fraley dashed for third. The ball took a hard bounce off the backstop and Rogers gunned down Fraley at third to end the inning.

The Mariners took their first lead of the game in the top of the 10th against reliever Jose Cisnero, who had been celebrating Paredes’ apparent game-winning homer in the bullpen only moments earlier. J.P. Crawford singled against a drawn-in infield to score Dillon Thomas, who had been placed on second base at the start of extra innings.

Incredibly, the Tigers came close to another walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th, but Akil Baddoo’s drive to right field was just a few feet foul. Paredes, the designated runner, scored a few pitches later on Mariners reliever J.T. Chargois’ wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4.

Things fell apart for the Tigers in the top of the 11th and Thomas, who was making his Major League debut and had about a dozen friends and family seated behind home plate, delivered the key, two-run single to get a memorable first hit.

The Tigers weren’t quite done, as Robbie Grossman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th. But it wasn’t a walk-off, just something to make the score look a little bit better.

Paredes had his first hit of 2021 and his first career triple in the second inning. Paredes had not been scheduled to start on Wednesday, but he was inserted in the lineup after Harold Castro injured his right hand during a pregame drill.

Paredes was stranded at third when Thomas, the Mariners’ right fielder, made an impressive catch against the right-field wall to rob Niko Goodrum of extra bases. It was the first putout of his big-league career.

Up next: The Tigers and Mariners wrap up their three-game series on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. The Tigers will have a bullpen day started by lefty Tyler Alexander (0-0, 4.56 ERA). Lefty Justus Sheffield (5-4, 4.77) will start for Seattle.
