CAROGA LAKE — Prior to the 7 p.m. Caroga Town Board meeting, the Nick Stoner Municipal Golf Course Steering Committee met at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss progress on the course since the fire that burned the former clubhouse last November.

The zoom meeting covered a re-design of the course which is planned, speculation on building a new clubhouse, replacing equipment lost in November’s fire and progress so far on use of the course.

Groundskeeper Steven Stedman stated equipment purchases to be delivered July and August have been pushed back to August-September. But he said the only item that was most needed was the greens sprayer, due to the old sprayer only holding 50 gallons at a time while the new one ordered will have 200 gallon capacity.

Otherwise, Stedman stated the greens and fairways were recovering nicely from winterkill and other damage. A description of the golf architect’s plan for improvement of the course included flipping the front and back nine holes and extending some fairways.

Course manager Jerry Groom stated a wedding was scheduled to take place Saturday at the park by the course and traffic would be re-routed for golfers. The late afternoon wedding “shouldn’t affect play,” according to Groom.

Parks, Lakes, Recreation and Tourism Director Gene Centi reported an increase in usage of the golf course from last year, with 390 merchandise items sold to date and 526 food and beverage items sold. It was also reported that junior memberships were up by 10 to 15 memberships since last year.
