The Mets were looking for a series sweep but one mighty blast off the bat of Fernando Tatis Jr. ended any hopes of that dream as the Mets fell to the Padres 7-3.
Joey Lucchesi got the start for the Mets, and despite a leadoff home run to Tommy Pham, was excellent on the mound. He pitched five solid innings and gave up just the one run while striking out six Padre hitters. He even exited the game with the lead after Jose Peraza hit a home run to give the Mets a slim one-run lead.
The bullpen made that disappear and then some in the seventh inning. In his second inning of work Jeurys Familia was clearly laboring and walked in a run with the bases loaded. In came Jacob Barnes to relieve Familia and offered very little relief. Tatis Jr. promptly unloaded the bases with one swing and then Manny Machado followed up with a blast of his own to firmly put the game out of reach.
There was a scary moment when Pete Alonso got hit in the helmet with a pitch in the eighth but he immediately popped up and went to first base. Dom Smith erased him on the bases after a fielder’s choice, but he eventually came around to score on a hit by Tomas Nido for the Mets’ third run.
With the Mets shorthanded, the bullpen’s underbelly was exposed but the Mets still took the season series from the Padres and remain in first place.
