The Mets looked somewhat overmatched early in the game by Yu Darvish, while Taijuan Walker—who never seemed to get comfortable on the Petco Park mound—had to pitch around trouble early, stranding two runners in each of the first two innings.
In the third, that trouble finally crossed the plate. Walker walked Manny Machado to lead off the frame. With one out, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a high fly ball to deep center. Mason Williams seemed to have the ball lined up as he leapt at the wall, and, while it would have taken an excellent catch, the ball bounced out of his glove and over the wall for a two-run home run.
The Padres added another run in the bottom of the fourth before the Mets had even recorded a hit off of Darvish. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Williams broke up the no hit bit with an infield single. Jose Peraza followed with a single to put runners on first and third, but—with chances against Darvish seeming to be scant—Luis Rojas made the curious choice to let a laboring Walker bat, and he ground out to short circuit the threat.
The Padres would add a fourth run against Walker in the bottom of the frame—albeit an unearned one. With Tatis on first after an infield single and one out, Brandon Drury fielded a slow ground ball—probably too slow to turn a double play, but with his poor throw to second, everyone was safe. This would prove costly when Tatis advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
The dormant Mets offense suddenly awoke in the top of the sixth, as Francisco Lindor singled to center and the red hot James McCann ripped a two-run home run to left. The tiring Darvish was pulled after a hit by pitch, and the Mets loaded the bases with one out thanks to a walk and an error. The Mets sent up a resting Pete Alonso to pinch hit against sidearming lefty reliever Tim Hill, but Hill was able to induce a double play to escape the jam.
The Mets bullpen would keep the team in the game, and they almost came all the way back in the eighth when Lindor led off with a walk. With two outs, Billy McKinney lofted a fly ball that hit about a foot from the top of the right field wall, just missed a game tying home run. The ball took a strange bounce away from Will Myers, but Manny Machado—already deep in the outfield on a shift—help McKinney to a triple. That potential tying run would remain there when Drury would ground out to short.
The Mets would get the first two runners on in the ninth against Padres closer Mark Melancon, but a sharp Kevin Pillar grounder up the middle would turn into a game ending double play, as the Mets couldn’t quite come all the way back in a game it seemed unlikely they would even be competitive in early.
