The Mets opened a nine game road trip in Arizona Monday night with three reinforcements activated from the injured list in Pete Alonso, Seth Lugo, and Kevin Pillar, and with the incomparable Jacob deGrom on the hill. And while deGrom looked good enough to have a shot at history early in the game, Pete Alonso provided immediate offensive support for the ace in the Mets’ 6-2 victory.
After both teams went in order in the first two innings, the Mets strung together four singles in the top of the third, with Alonso’s liner with the bases loaded plating the first two runs of the game. The Diamondbacks gifted the Mets another run in the third when, with two outs, a Jose Peraza fly ball dropped between David Peralta and Ketel Marte for a double. Arizona intentionally walked Mason Williams to get bring up deGrom, who made them pay by lashing a single to right to extend the lead to 3-0.
At that point, the drama seemed to be if deGrom had a shot at history, as he retired the first thirteen batters of the game before Carson Kelly lined a single into right center to end the early flirtation with perfection. Arizona got a second hit in the inning against deGrom, who struck out Domingo Leyba to end the only threat he would face.
Alonso seemed to salt the game away in the sixth with a 442 foot bomb to left to extend the lead to 5-0, but the Diamondbacks quickly found hitting off of non-deGrom pitchers much easier. Trevor May’s recent struggles continued as he surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and got bailed out by Miguel Castro—or, more precisely, by Williams’ excellent catch at the center field wall to end the Arizona threat.
The Mets’ top of the eighth featured a solo home run from Billy McKinney and a huge ovation from a very pro-Mets crowd in Arizona for Kevin Pillar—who promptly singled to left in his first at bat since getting plunked.
