Final score: Mets 6, Cubs 3—Bittersweet - Amazin' Avenue

The Mets beat the Cubs for the third straight day on Wednesday night, but it didn’t feel like a win at all.

After pitching a perfect first three innings and striking out eight of the first nine batters (including seven in a row), Jacob deGrom exited the game early with right shoulder tightness.

Before leaving the game, deGrom helped himself out with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, driving in Kevin Pillar. Pillar was on base thanks to an RBI hit of his own, which gave the Mets their first run of the night.

In the third, Dominic Smith continued his recent hot streak, hitting a solo homer into the Coca-Cola Corner, and in the fourth, Cubs starter Robert Stock walked in a run, and gave up another on a Dominic Smith RBI groundout. In the bottom of the fifth, Kevin Pillar socked a solo homer to deep left field, giving him a multi-RBI game.

In relief of deGrom, Sean Reid-Foley, Aaron Loup, Miguel Castro, and Trevor May all turned in impressive performances, as the Cubs had just one hit against those relievers, an Anthony Rizzo solo homer off of Reid-Foley. In the ninth, Drew Smith struggled and gave up a two-run homer, and Edwin Diaz came on to secure the win with a one-out save.

Full recap to follow.
