In a battle of 2018 Cy Young winners, Blake Snell pitched well through four innings and wilted in the fifth, while Jacob deGrom faced the minimum number of Padres batters through six, striking out ten of them and not allowing a runner past first base. deGrom also drove in two runs with a one-out single in the fifth inning, delivering the final blow to Snell that knocked him out of the game with a 3-0 deficit.
Billy McKinney broke the 0-0 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI double that scored Kevin Pillar from second base. A walk to José Peraza and a Snell balk advanced both runners to second base, setting deGrom up for the most impactful hit of the night.
deGrom left the game after six innings and ten strikeouts, finishing his start after 80 pitches due to right flexor tendinitis, according to Anthony DiComo. In the fifth and sixth innings, deGrom experienced a dip in his fastball velocity as it sat in the high-90s.
Jake Cronenworth hit a two-run home run off of Miguel Castro in the top of the seventh inning to bring the Padres within one run of the Mets, but those were the only two runs they would score on the night with a series of Seth Lugo, Aaron Loup, and Edwin Díaz finishing the series opener with a win. The Mets play the Padres again tomorrow at 4:10 PM, with Marcus Stroman set to pitch against Joe Musgrove.
