I won’t say the good times can’t keep rolling, because one loss doesn’t necessarily end things. Just make sure you win tonight. Inevitably, the combo of bats and starting pitching and the bullpen would have an off night, and so it was maybe best to get them all out of the way on the same night! That’s the spirit!
Joc Pederson kicked off the game by sending the first pitch to the wall in center field (leaping catch), and later sent one into McCovey Cove. But the Cubs’ bats didn’t otherwise muster much against Anthony DeSclafani and the Giants pen. It happens – good pitching, good defense, tough park.
Zach Davies was as good as he’s looked all year … in the first inning. Then immediately in the second, and for the rest of his brief evening, the Giants were on him. He didn’t leave *that* many pitches up, but the ones he did got punished. He was also wild enough to walk a couple and put himself into hitter’s counts too frequently. Of course, his line could’ve looked better if not for the two inherited runners that scored when Rex Brothers came in and gave up a three-run homer to Brandon Crawford. Still, it wasn’t a great night for Davies.
Speaking of Brothers, his opportunities for non-mop-up spots had already waned, and you want to give him a chance to shake off the rust, but when you’re summoned for a key match-up and it goes like that – in a bullpen that is overflowing with options – the opportunities start waning again. Fair or unfair, small sample or no, that’s just kinda the score when you have a whole lotta guys available. Similarly, Dillon Maples got some low-leverage work and gave up a couple runs to really put the game out of reach.
