LOS ANGELES — The game of baseball is rife with entirely forgettable moments, the kind of nights in which the sunset over the Hollywood Hills is the most memorable event in Chavez Ravine.

Then there are games like the one between the Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Dodgers scored 11 runs in the first inning. The final score was 14-3. The game was over before the sun had time to set, before some of the 15,880 in attendance had time to sit down.

The winner and loser were never in doubt. The only question was not whether all that transpired was some sort of record, but how many records fell in the process.

Answer: a few.

No Dodger had ever driven in six runs in a single inning before Cody Bellinger teed up two pitches in his first two at-bats, one for a two-run single and another for a grand slam.

“You never expect to get two at-bats in the first inning,” Bellinger said.

No Dodger team had scored 11 in a regular-season inning since the team left Brooklyn. The feat had not been achieved since a 13-run eighth inning in 1954 and a 15-run first inning in 1952, a time when Jackie Robinson was patrolling the Brooklyn infield.

Then there was Carlos Martinez.

The Cardinals’ starting pitcher suffered through an execrable half-hour on the mound, allowing 10 runs in two-thirds of an inning. His earned-run average for the season rose from 4.22 to 5.83. The ERA for Martinez’s career, which began in 2013, rose from 3.55 to 3.64.

No pitcher had ever started a game at Dodger Stadium and allowed more than seven runs in less than an inning. Only two starting pitchers ever, in any venue, allowed more runs in such a short outing.

“All night long the at-bat quality was so good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Taking walks, getting Martinez out of there early, getting the pitch count up, the big blow with Cody. Across the board, really fun.”

The Dodgers did not make an out until pitcher Walker Buehler struck out attempting to lay down a bunt. The score was 6-0 at that point; the Dodgers would score five more runs before the inning ended. Zach McKinstry, who had a two-run single, Justin Turner and Mookie Betts (two hits in the inning, including a bloop double to begin it all) also had RBIs in the first. The Dodgers had seven of their 10 hits in the inning and sent 14 batters to the plate.

Buehler wasn’t on the mound when the Dodgers scored 11 runs in Game 3 of the NL Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves last October, their only other 11-run inning since 1955.

“I don’t think I’ve thrown in one quite like that,” Buehler said.

The Dodgers can pack for an East Coast road trip following an even homestand in which they won three of seven games. At 33-23, they’re 1½ games behind the first-place San Francisco Giants (34-21) and a half-game behind the San Diego Padres (34-23) in the top-heavy National League West.

The grand finale was a welcome breakthrough not just for the Dodgers, but for Bellinger and Betts.

Bellinger was 1 for 12 in four games since returning from the injured list. By the time the first inning ended, he’d tripled his RBI total for the season. Bellinger finished 2 for 4 with a walk.

“It definitely felt good,” he said. “You can’t replicate big-league pitching. Even though I was striking out a lot, I felt good at the plate. I was just missing pitches. That comes with routines and reps.”

Betts’ batting average had fallen to a season-low .246 on Sunday. By going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, he raised his average to .264.

Buehler was the beneficiary of the batting bounty. He put the Dodgers in a 1-0 hole when Paul Goldschmidt hit a home run to center field in the top of the first inning. Given a vast margin for error, Buehler thrived. He allowed three runs in six innings, walking a pair of batters and striking out eight.

Buehler even helped himself in the fourth inning, when his double down the right-field line scored the Dodgers’ 12th and 13th runs.

“It’s kind of a blind-squirrel-finds-a-nut thing,” he said.

Every player in the Dodgers’ starting lineup reached base at least once, and all but Buehler scored a run. The Dodgers went 8 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

Edwin Uceta threw two scoreless innings of relief before Alex Vesia pitched a scoreless ninth.

This season has been defined by the players who were unavailable due to injuries. Wednesday was the rare occasion when the Dodgers’ stars were mostly present and hitting like stars.

“You look around the clubhouse, these are the guys we envisioned being on our club,” Roberts said. “When you’re playing our club and you see Bellinger in there, Betts in there, it matters.”
