As viewers are eagerly awaiting filming to being on season 13 of American Ninja Warrior, they’ve cast a new spin-off challenge that brings a new twist to the obstacle course: families. If the obstacle course is anything like the regular qualifying course, most families wouldn’t be able to make it far. Obviously the makers of American Ninja Warrior realized this and came up with a creative new way to do the show.
This isn’t the first spin-off show the popular obstacle course has done. In 2018, American Ninja Warrior Junior was released for kids aged 9-14. The kids were mentored by experienced ninjas, including Jessie Graff and 31-year-old Najee Richardson. In 2014, USA vs the World premiered, where select ninjas from the American version compete against teams of ninjas from other countries including Japan and Australia. Unlike Juniors, this spin-off is a single episode special rather than a whole season.
For this newest spin-off, a casting call went out looking for three-member family teams. Rather than every person running the course individually, this challenge will be a relay race. Each family member is tasked with completing two obstacles of the six-part obstacle course. After all the families have run, the top two teams will compete on the Power Tower to determine the ultimate winner. The show will most likely be hosted by seasoned duo Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbajabiamila.
There were some very specific casting requirements for families that wanted to apply to compete. Their three-person team is required to all be from one family, although that could include extended family like cousins, aunts, or uncles. The team had to include at least one teenager aged 15-19 and one woman. Many of the chosen families are not completely new to the show. The casting includes Amanda O’Dell, known as the Lunch Lady Ninja, who competed on season 11 of American Ninja Warrior. Teenager Kai Beckstrand competed on American Ninja Warrior Junior. That won’t necessarily give him and his family an advantage, as the Junior course involves smaller obstacles, while the family course will be full-sized.
American Ninja Warrior has inspired many spin-offs and similar competitions with variations, even an obstacle course for cars. People just can’t get enough of the rarely-conquered obstacle course. If the family version is popular, this could be the first of many seasons to come. While the pandemic may make USA vs the World impossible to film this year, viewers can look forward to the first season of the family version as well as season 13 of the original American Ninja Warrior.
