Duke and North Carolina are both coming off losses to middling league foes and are in desperate need of victories to gain momentum as they teeter on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into their rivalry showdown on Saturday. It's against that backdrop that a deep crop of freshmen on both teams will experience their first of two regular-season Tobacco Road Rivalry meetings this season.
Both teams are led in scoring by sophomores — Armando Bacot for UNC and Matthew Hurt for Duke — but newcomers will play key roles for both squads, and their performance could be the deciding factor. In particular, the battle of freshmen guards will be critical, as North Carolina's Caleb Love, RJ Davis and Kerwin Walton match up against Duke's DJ Steward and Jeremy Roach. All were top-150 prospects in the 2020 recruiting class and each have had moments of brilliance this season.
But for either team to reach its full potential this season, getting the most out of their young guards will be critical, and a big performance on Saturday from either group of guards could be the impetus to invigorating a late-season push for one of these blueblood programs.
