Carey Olsen to expand its Bermuda team - Royal Gazette

Updated: Feb 15, 2021 12:16 PM

Three new attorneys are to join the Bermuda office of international law firm Carey Olsen.

The firm said they will join “in the coming weeks” at its office on the fifth floor of the Rosebank Centre on Bermudiana Road.

The firm, which formerly had an office on Par-la-Ville Road celebrated its third anniversary in November and now has a team of nearly 40 employees, necessitating the move to larger premises.

Bermudian lawyer Kent Smith joins as counsel after 15 years with Conyers Dill & Pearman in Bermuda.

The firm said Mr Smith is a specialist in corporate law, and his practice has a particular emphasis on insurance/reinsurance regulatory and transactional matters.

Carey Olsen said his arrival will be followed by the appointment of international arbitration specialist and counsel Matthew Shaw, and corporate attorney Max Tetlow.

The firm said Mr Shaw is to join following a 16-year period at two leading international firms in Singapore while Mr Tetlow, who trained in Bermuda, will be focusing on corporate transactions and investment funds at the firm after spending the last two years in a leading Australian law firm.

Michael Hanson, managing partner of Carey Olsen’s Bermuda office, said: "The move to the Rosebank Centre represents another major step forward in our story and we are very grateful to our hard-working team and to our clients for their steadfast support.

"With some 40 employees now working in Bermuda the investment in a larger office provides us with the space to continue to expand and build on our position as one of the leading law firms in Bermuda.

“We are wholly committed to the island and its future as a leading offshore jurisdiction. We are also cognisant of its history, and reflective of this ethos is the fact that our staff voted to name our six new conference rooms after their favourite Bermuda heroes.

"Our growth ambitions for Bermuda continue, and we will have more exciting announcements over the coming 12 months."
