Youth on Course, a California-based non-profit that helps cover the cost of golf for children, has raised more than $950,000 through its 100 Hole Hike fundraiser in September and October.

The fundraiser saw 192 “hikers” in 21 states and Canada receive pledges for dollar amounts for each hole they would play – on foot – on a given day, with the goal being 100 holes. Each of those dollars was earmarked for Youth on Course, and the total was enough to subsidize more than 130,000 rounds of golf to more than 100,000 Youth on Course members across 38 states and Canada.

“Hiking 100 holes is a daunting task, but when we take a step back and see the positive impact this event has on the lives of young people, beyond the golf course, it makes the undertaking worth it,” Ashleigh McLaughlin, vice president of marketing and communications for Youth on Course, said in a media release. “It has been a rewarding experience hearing from families across the country telling us how Youth on Course has changed their lives for the better.”

Founded in 2006 by the Northern California Golf Association, Youth on Course subsidizes green fees for its members, who are ages 6 to 18, allowing them to play participating courses during designated time blocks for the discounted rate of $5. The organization picks up the rest of a negotiated price at more than 1,400 participating courses.

Youth on Course has taken off since branching out of California in 2014 and ’15, and now offers programs in cooperation with other state and regional golf associations. The program also offers opportunities for internships, college scholarships and caddie programs.

“This year golf has experienced a significant surge in rounds, especially among our young members, which makes fundraising even more vital for our organization,” Jeff Clark, chief development officer for Youth on Course, said in the media release. “The 100 Hole Hike is an incredibly challenging event, and we are proud of the 192 hikers that came together to raise a record amount to help change the lives of our members.”
