Soft conditions at Augusta National led to another scoring bonanza at the 2020 Masters on Friday as 23 golfers posted under-par scores in Round 2. That means there's now 49 golfers entering Saturday positioned in the red, setting up what should be a delightful day of action on Moving Day.
There was plenty of moving and shaking at the top of the leaderboard Friday to whet the appetite for the weekend, too, and some of the sport's stars shined bright. Justin Thomas put together a 3-under 69 to claim a share of the lead, Abraham Ancer posted the best round in his debut at the Masters with a 67, and both Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith put together quality rounds. All four share the lead at 9 under as we roll into Saturday.
It wasn't all hunkydory for the contenders in Day 2 of this year's competition, however. Thursday leader Paul Casey dropped outside of the top 10 after going 1 over through 11 holes. Tiger Woods, top 10 on the leaderboard after Thursday, slipped down to T22 after a second-round showing of even through 10. And Bryson DeChambeau, after an opening-round 70, is on the cusp of potentially missing the cut as he tries to dig out of an early-morning implosion. He's 1 over overall and finished 3 over on the day before play was called. DeChambeau will resume early Saturday morning with an eagle attempt on the par-5 13th hole.
Round 2 was called due to darkness but will resume at 7:30 a.m. ET with Round 3 expected to begin at 10:30 a.m. The goal at Augusta National is to complete the third round on Saturday. As for the rest of the contenders, here's a rundown of what transpired from Friday.
2020 Masters leaderboard
T1. Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Abraham Ancer and Cameron Smith (-9): It was Ancer and Smith who claimed the best rounds of this quartet on Friday after posting 67 and 68, respectively, to grab a share of the lead. But Johnson and Thomas, the world No. 1 and world No. 3, were steady as ever. Johnson followed up his scorching 65 in Round 1 with a 70, while Thomas turned in with a 69. He finished his second round with seven birdies as both J.T. and D.J. played nearly a round and a half on Friday.
T5. Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay and Sungjae Im (-8): Cantlay's 6-under 66 was tied for the lowest Round 2 score of the day as he climbed the leaderboard into the top five. It was his first bogey-free round at Augusta since Round 3 last year and an outing that makes him an incredible 20 under par in his last four rounds at the Masters.
T8. Justin Rose, Danny Willett and 4 others (-7): 2016 Masters Champion tied for the low round on the day with his own 6-under 66, redeeming himself from an opening-round 71. It was the best single-round score at the event for him of his career. Rose, the two-time Masters runner-up, had a bumpy start to his day. Starting on the second nine, he was 1 over through his first nine before playing his final nine at 3 under.
T14. Xander Schauffele, Paul Casey and 3 others (-6): Schauffele's second round was trending upward after play was called Thursday as he was 1 under through 12 holes after starting his day on the second nine. He double-bogeyed his second hole of the day Friday but found a little groove with a birdie on the par-5 13th. Before play was called, he made consecutive birdies on Nos. 2 and 3.
T19. Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Charles Howell III (-5): You didn't count out a four-time major champion after his opening-round 70, did you? Because that would be silly. Koepka brought some heat as an encore on Friday to prove it, carding a 69 replete with six birdies on the day. Mickelson turned in a 70, while Howell (an Augusta, Georgia, native) is 4 under on his second round with three holes left to play.
T22. Tiger Woods and 4 others (-4): Woods was among those who finished their second rounds on Friday. He started late Saturday and ended up even overall, though he's in position to make a run on Moving Day. Tiger is now five back of the leaders, though, with some heavy hitters in front of him. It will be a trek to the top through these golfers.
T27. Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and 5 others (-3): If not for an opening-round 75 for McIlroy, we could potentially be talking about him as a favorite entering the weekend after what he did Friday. He turned in a 66 in the second round -- tied for his second-best 18-hole score at the Masters -- and climbed into contention despite some close misses with the putter on several occasions. Scheffler did not get to finish his second round but is 2 under through 13 holes.
T61. Bryson DeChambeau and 7 others (+1): DeChambeau stopped short of an all-out implosion, but the early going wasn't pretty. He triple bogeyed the par-4 3rd then bogeyed three of his next four to dig himself a hole as he neared the turn. Birdies on No. 6, 8 and 12 are keeping him afloat, but he needs to finish his second round strong to be playing into the weekend. He'll resume his round Saturday morning with an eagle putt on the par-5 13th.
