TYNGSBORO — Firefighters were called to the former Tyngsboro Country Club after a blaze broke out in a vacant building on the property Wednesday night.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire, which remains under investigation, the Tyngsboro Police Department wrote in a statement on their website. A department spokesman added on Thursday night that the cause of the fire is not considered suspicious.

According to an emergency radio broadcast, a resident of Cardinal Lane contacted firefighters after spotting flames through a wood line around 8 p.m. Tyngsboro firefighters arrived to find a building located on the former country club’s property, north of Sherburne Avneue, fully engulfed in flames.

Brian Vigeant, who lives on Cardinal Lane, said he looked out his front door around 8 p.m. to see an orange glow coming out of the woods.

“It almost seemed like something blew up,” Vigeant said. “It was a big blaze of fire. It went out pretty quick when they got to it though.”

Based on the radio broadcast, firefighters were met with multiple obstacles battling the blaze, reporting propane tanks outside the burning structure, as well as live wires.

It was reported over the radio around 8:25 p.m. that firefighters ran hose down an access path off Cardinal Lane, and were able to get water on the structure. The building, which collapsed as firefighters subdued the flames, was identified over the radio as a vacant building on the former golf course’s property.

It was reported around 9:15 p.m. that the blaze was under control.

Police said the Tyngsboro Fire Department, Tyngsboro Police Detective Bureau, and state Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

On Thursday afternoon, a couple groups of people could be seen visiting the structure that was reduced to piles of scorched lumber and ash. A stone fireplace was the only part of the building still standing after the fire. The area, surrounded by trampled brush and torched trees, still reeked of smoke.

The Westford, Chelmsford and Dunstable fire departments provided mutual aid assistance during the approximate three hours Tyngsboro firefighters remained on the scene of the blaze.

Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to contact Detective Peter Kulisich at 978-649-7504, Ext. 164.

The former Tyngsboro Country Club property has been a hot-button topic for town officials and community members since the nine-hole golf course closed in 2018.

In June, selectmen voted to waive the town’s right of first refusal to purchase the property. This cleared the way for the Toll Brothers development company to move forward with a proposal to buy the land and build a 100-unit, age-restricted development on 56 acres of the property.

The plan, which was awaiting approval by several town boards as of June, would involve the Toll Brothers donating 32 acres of the former country club property between Sherburne Avenue and Pawtucket Boulevard to the town.

Those living in the area have been vocal about the land’s future, urging the town to pursue buying the land, with the desire to keep the space undeveloped.

During the June meeting, David Bauer, of Toll Brothers, said he could not disclose the final price Toll Brothers would pay for the plot, but said it was higher than the figure the town had considered paying for the property.

A call to Toll Brothers was not immediately returned.
