PLP secures landslide victory in Bermuda | New York Carib News - NYCaribNews

David Burt, Premier of Bermuda

The Progressive Labour Party (PLP) emerged victorious in last Thursday’s general election in Bermuda, after it defeated the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA).

Reports from the Parliamentary Registry shows the PLP won the election with 15,998 votes or 62.10 percent of the electorate.

The OBA took the remaining six seats with 8,314 votes or 32.27 percent of the electorate, while The Free Democratic Movement (FDM) secured 1,384 votes and Independent candidates received 67 votes.

In an address last night, Premier David Burt called for unity in Bermuda as the territory moves forward to combat the challenges ahead such as the coronavirus (COVID-19).

He pledged that his Government will not take its majority in the House of Assembly for granted and added that he will meet with his colleagues before heading to Government House to swear-in a new administration on October 8.

“It is time to come together because we have a lot of work to do,” Burt stated as he attempted to reach out to Bermudians who did not support his government’s attempt to retain power.

“We have an incredibly difficult road ahead for this country and it is going to require us all to work together. I now say that it is time for us to put aside our historical divisions and come together as one people.”

OBA leader Craig Cannonier has not released a concession statement.
