The St. Louis Cardinals visit the San Diego Padres for a win-or-go-home Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Friday night. It is the last game of this round, as seven teams have already advanced to the divisional round while seven others have been sent home.
The Cardinals took Game 1 of the series behind an early rally. They again rallied early in Game 2 and were close to advancing, but then the Padres activated their power and flipped the script, forcing a decisive Game 3. The Cardinals will send Jack Flaherty to the mound on Friday. He opened the season as their ace and was considered a Cy Young favorite, but had an inconsistent season.
The Padres went through nearly all their available pitching in the first two games, to the point that manager Jayce Tinger on Thursday night said he had "no idea" who would start Game 3. They ended up on career reliever Craig Stammen to start a bullpen game for San Diego. As such, all signs point to a slugfest, just as we saw in Game 2, once the Padres' bat woke up.
