Special teams and turnovers are having a significant impact in Minneapolis, where No. 18 Michigan leads No. 21 Minnesota 21-10 after the first quarter. The Gophers announced just before kickoff that they would be without their starting right guard and tackle on the offensive line, along with starters at linebacker, both kicker positions and punter. Every absence has made itself evident.
Ironically, Minnesota struck first, taking a 7-0 lead after blocking a Michigan punt. Michigan responded right away with a 70-yard touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet aided by miscommunication on the Minnesota defense at the second level. Michigan's defense continually put Tanner Morgan under pressure, and a blitz from the right side of the Minnesota line -- where the starters are missing -- resulted in Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan being sacked and fumbling the ball right into the arms of Donovan Jeter, who took it to the house. Minnesota stemmed the bleeding with a field goal drive to make it 14-10, but Michigan returned the ensuing squib kick -- remember the missing kickoff specialist -- 65 yards to set up another touchdown.
It's been a wild game through 15 minutes, and we've still got 45 more to go. CBS Sports will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest from the Michigan vs. Minnesota game. Keep it locked here for live updates, highlights and more on Saturday night.
