British Airways has just announced that from 28 March 2021, it will operate daily flights from London Heathrow to Bermuda. BA’s Director of Network and Alliances, Neil Chernoff, said “this is the first time we have flown to Bermuda from London’s biggest airport for over three decades.” The last BA flight from London Heathrow to Bermuda was in 1989.

Bermuda’s beautiful, secluded islands situated in the North Atlantic Ocean are home to some of the world’s most stunning reefs for scuba diving or snorkeling. As well as being a top diving destination, this island territory is renowned for its lovely, long white sand beaches. The 181 islands that make up Bermuda are also virtually covid-free as they’ve reported less than 200 cases. Bermuda’s Minister of Transport the Hon. Neville Tyrrell says that the new route from London Heathrow “should prove pivotal in the island’s pandemic recovery.”

For travellers nervous about long haul flights during the Covid-19 pandemic, British Airways is keen to let people know they’ve introduced a range of measures to keep its customers safe, including observing social distancing and using hand sanitisers that are placed throughout airports, providing facemasks and bringing enough to replace them every four hours for longer flights, cleaning all key surfaces including seats, screens, seat buckles and tray tables after every flight plus each aircraft is completely cleaned from nose to tail every day. The air on all British Airways flights is fully recycled once every two to three minutes through HEPA filters, which remove microscopic bacteria and virus clusters with over 99.9% efficiency, equivalent to hospital operating theater standards.

Once in Bermuda, on Main Island, the largest of the islands making up the country, Hamilton, the capital city is the obvious starting point on any visit. Azura Boutique Hotel and Residences, a boutique hotel with apartments for sale too, bravely opened earlier this year. This hotel has a gorgeous position, set on the cliffs of Bermuda’s South Shore, a ten-minute drive to Hamilton. There are many other luxury hotels on the south shore of the island to choose from. Beaches and diving are known as Bermuda’s main attractions. Numerous wrecks and coral reefs in relatively shallow water are a thrill for scuba divers. And for snorkellers, the reefs at Church Bay are easily accessible from shore.

Aside from superb diving opportunities and sunbathing, Bermuda also offers sightseeing attractions. Historic St George's, settled in 1612, was the first permanent English town and is a designated World Heritage Site. Two must-visit sites include the old State House, constructed in 1620 to house the government, the first stone building in Bermuda and St. Peter's is the oldest surviving Anglican church in the Western hemisphere. Other top attractions include the Royal Naval Dockyard, which includes the National Museum of Bermuda, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute and the Botanical Gardens.
