Coast Guard finds no ship after responding to beacon off Bermuda

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) -- A local U.S. Coast Guard crew found no vessel in an area off Bermuda where homing beacon went off overnight.

Coast Guard officials said the beacon was assigned to a Danish ship that appeared to located about 200 southeast of Bermuda. A helicopter crew from Elizabeth City was dispatched to the area around 1 a.m., but found nothing when they arrived an hour later.

According to the Coast Guard, Denmark claimed the ship in question had been sold and was no longer under the country's jurisdiction.

Officials said they are looking into all possibilities, but no ship has been found.
