Conor White and Caitlin Conyers competed in the Individual Time Trial event at the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Saturday, capturing silver and bronze medals in their respective categories.
White is in his first year out of juniors and raced in the Under 23 event over 30 kilometers, finishing in 40 minutes and 40 seconds. His time was the fifth fastest of all the men, and was made more impressive in that the result was achieved in a torrential downpour.
Conyers — in her first international race representing Bermuda — turned in an impressive 20 kilometer ride, covering the distance in 30 minutes and 13 seconds. With the women starting earlier than the men they were able to avoid the worst of the day’s weather and the top three all produced average speeds over 24.5 mph.
Racing continues today with the road races, in which Gabriella Arnold will join Conyers, and Dominique Mayho will join White in their respective events.
In addition to the regional heads of cycling, Mr. David Lappartient, President of the International Cycling Union is attending the regional championships and was on hand to present medals to Conyers and White.
