This Palm Beach sailor has joined the Bermuda Race Roll of Honour

Sail in 22 Newport-to-Bermuda races and what do you have to show for it?

If you’re Palm Beach resident E. Llwyd Ecclestone, you have a winner’s trophy (from 2006), a fiercely loyal crew and bragging rights at every snooty yacht club in the world.

And now, an induction.

Ecclestone, 80, and the late Richard Nye are the newest members of the Bermuda Race Roll of Honour.

The Roll of Honour was established in 2006 by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club as a way to recognize and honor extraordinary sailors who have endured the Thrash to the Onion Patch.

Ecclestone and Nye are the ninth and 10th members of the Roll of Honour.

A 22-time Onion Patcher, Ecclestone has missed only three of the biennial voyages since 1968.

A fearless voyager, he won the St. David’s Lighthouse Trophy — and yes, it actually is a miniature St. David’s Lighthouse, rendered in silver— in 2006 aboard Kodiak, because he took an alternative course so remote it is known as The Death Zone.

Ecclestone’s Roll of Honour entry describes him a a sailor who is “meticulous in his preparations, ambitious in his boats and goals … to his loyal crew he is the model skipper.”

Other Roll of Honour members are Warren Brown, George Coumantaros, race founder Thomas Fleming Day, Carleton Mitchell, Bobby Somerset and Clarence Kozlay — jointly inducted for heroic actions at sea during which Kozlay lost his life — Olin Stephens, and Eldon Trimingham.

The 2018 Newport to Bermuda Race is now underway, with Ecclestone and Kodiak competing in the eight-boat St. David’s class, alongside Chip Merlin’s Bill Lee custom Merlin; William N. Hubbard’s R/Pugh 57 Siren; Viktor Turner’s Ker 50 custom Wahoo; Arthur Santry’s Ker 50 Temptation -Oakcliff; Carol Smolawa’s J/V 53 custom Bank von Bremen; Kenneth Laudon’s Santa Cruz 52 Magic; and Andrew and Linda Weiss’ Ker 43 Christopher Dragon.

As of this morning, Ecclestone and Kodiak were 150 miles out of Newport, running 14th among all entries and second in the St. David’s division.
