Golf fans take note, a Scottish apartment overlooking what might be the world’s most famous course has just hit the market.

The two-bedroom flat, asking for offers over £2.3 million (US$2.9 million), is within Hamilton Grand, a stately red sandstone property in the historic seaside town St. Andrews, and overlooks the 18th green of the world famous Old Course.

Originally the Grand Hotel, the building was commissioned in 1895 and even then it was the pinnacle of luxury. It was the first building in Scotland to have a pneumatic elevator and hot and cold water running in every bathroom, according to the listing with Savills, which brought the apartment to the market on Friday.

During World War II the building was transformed into training headquarters for the Royal Air Force. The prestigious University of St. Andrews acquired the building after the war and used it as a student residence until 2010, when it sold the building to Kohler & Co., which owns resorts and spas globally.

The company stripped the building to its shell and restored it, added an extra floor and created 27 homes along with a concierge, a private lounge for residents and a roof terrace, from which the views over the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the Old Course and out across the sea are “beyond comparison,” Savills said.

The flat’s balconies offer front row seats to the Old Course.

The flat “was one of the first units to sell after the refurbishment and is one of the best units in the building,” said Jamie Macnab, the selling agent at Savills who specializes in the St. Andrews market.

Spanning a little over 1,000 square feet, the home has an open plan living and kitchen space with hardwood floors, a Georgian-style fireplace and French doors that lead onto a balcony with cast iron handrails and views over the green.

A second balcony is off one of the bedrooms, which also has a walk-in closet and a shower room.

“The appeal of St. Andrews and the Old Course is sometimes overlooked by U.K. buyers but attracts wealthy buyers from all over the world who love the game of golf,” Macnab said.

There are two bedrooms.

“Most people assume that all of the buyers are American, but the residents of Hamilton Grand are from all over the world, including several different European countries. This is a very rare opportunity to buy a piece of Scottish golfing heritage,” he said.

The flat is the first resale within the development, which has generated the highest price per square foot of any residential property in Scotland, Savills said.

Mansion Global couldn’t determine who is selling the unit, or how much it last traded for.
