A weather expert is to give a series of presentations at town hall-style meetings discussing the effects of climate change on Bermuda.
The talks titled Climate Change and Bermuda are being led by Mark Guishard, chief administrative officer for the Bermuda Airport Authority and former director for the Bermuda Weather Service.
The Bermuda Red Cross is hosting the meeting with the QBE Foundation, an arm of the global insurer QBE that aims to “improve the resilience and preparedness of our communities through long-term partnerships”.
A spokeswoman for the Bermuda Red Cross said: “Climate change is a phenomenon that is evident globally and locally with rising sea levels, changes in storm activity and warming seas all causing significant impacts on our island home.
“Our vision of the future should include awareness of the impacts of climate change together with action in response to the increasing threats.
“What kind of legacy do we want to leave for our children and grandchildren?
“Join us to learn more about the impacts and risks that climate change presents to Bermuda, and the local community. We all need to be accountable.”

• Thursday, July 6: St Paul AME Church Hall (Central) from 5:30pm to 7pm. Presentation & Refreshments
• Thursday, July 13: Penno’s Wharf, St George’s (East) from 5.30pm to 7pm Presentation & Refreshments
• Tuesday, July 18: St James Church Hall (West) from 6pm to 7.30pm.
Dr Guishard is a Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences adjunct scientist and a chartered meteorologist. He recently completed the Climate Change and Bermuda report for BIOS.
The two-part report predicts that climate change will have wide-ranging effects on Bermuda as sea levels rise, hurricanes become stronger and supply chains are further strained.
It’s executive summary said: “As climate change enables more water vapour to be available to produce larger rainfall extremes, the occurrence of flood rainfall thresholds being exceeded is likely to increase over time, putting many areas of the island under more frequent flooding impacts.”
The Bermuda Airport Authority website says Dr Guishard has 20 years of experience in atmospheric sciences, with expertise in the variability of Atlantic hurricane risk, Bermuda's weather and climate and disaster risk reduction.
It adds: “Dr Guishard has a long history with the Bermuda Weather Service, having been a meteorological forecaster since 1997, and previously serving as director from 2006 to 2012.
“He has technical training from the UK Meteorological Office and the US National Hurricane Centre, and has completed a number of management and leadership training activities in previous roles.”
Each town hall meeting will include Dr Guishard’s presentation, and refreshments will be served.
