Carnival organisers call off Saturday raft-up - Royal Gazette

Updated: Jun 16, 2023 02:26 AM

Bad weather forecasts for tomorrow, including the likelihood of gale-force gusts and lightning, has led the organisers of Bermuda Carnival to call off a raft-up planned at Shelly Bay.

Conditions predicted by the Bermuda Weather Service posed a potential risk to public safety and the decision was based on risk assessments from the Bermuda Coastguard, Bermuda Police Service and Parks Department.

A Carnival in Bermuda spokesman said: “Our paramount concern is the wellbeing of our attendees and we cannot compromise on public safety.”

He apologised to boaters and charter and party vessel operators and said the decision had been announced early to help the public to adjust their plans.

Ticket holders are to be refunded through their original method of payment within five business days.

The spokesman added: "Bermuda Day demonstrated our ability to overcome challenges even in unfavourable weather conditions.“

The J’Ouvert and Revel De Road scheduled for Monday will proceed as planned and other festivities planned for the weekend will proceed.

“It’s been raining for the past few weeks, people are in need of a positive release.

“We encourage the public to participate, immerse themselves in the captivating soca music and soca events, and embrace the boundless love and energy they offer.”
