Local course trains people for well-paying job 'nobody knows about' - WKRC TV Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – They are well-paying jobs and there are tons of openings, but few have the qualifications needed to become flight dispatchers.

Tim Marshall is out to change that. For the past seven years, he’s offered seven-day courses at Flamingo Air Academy and is about to wrap up his latest one.

His students have traveled from across the country to earn their certification as flight dispatchers, not to be confused with air traffic controllers.

“The aircraft dispatcher career is the best aviation career that nobody knows about,” Marshall said.

Student Sean Fowler spent his week learning how to chart flight paths around unfavorable weather conditions and calculate the weight distribution on planes.

“We would describe it as drinking out of a firehose, just all this information that you’re learning,” said Fowler, who currently works for a cargo airline in a different position.

While Marshall’s students have to do everything by hand, they’ll be using computers to design the flight paths in their future jobs.

“The computerized systems there, you’ll sit and maybe take 10 or 15 minutes to put information into the computer, press one button, it does it for you in a split second, done,” Marshall said.

Flight dispatchers are in constant communication with the pilot from takeoff to landing. They’re sometimes tasked with monitoring as many as three flights at a time.

In fact, it’s the dispatcher, along with the pilot, who has the final say before a plane takes off.

“The pay is great,” said Marshall. “You can start off with a high pay as a dispatcher.”

Dispatchers are in high demand currently, after the pandemic triggered a wave of early retirements.

“I will have other airlines standing outside waiting to grab them as they graduate,” said Marshall.

Student Luke Robins has already been pre-approved for a dispatcher job at a Michigan-based cargo airline upon completion of Marshall’s course.

“If I just stay as a dispatcher, I could do that, or I could move pretty much anywhere within my company or to another company,” Robins said.

Marshall’s students graduate on Friday, and he said representatives from a major airline will be on hand.
