FARMVILLE, Va. – In a preview of the Big South cross country championship near the end of October, Longwood men's and women's cross country hosted the Lancer Pink Invitational on Saturday morning. The Lancer men and women both finished second in the field with plenty to build on behind Big South power Radford.
Following the meet, the teams hosted a Fun Run/Walk that raised $2,467 for the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was senior day for Longwood, and almost every Lancer runner ran a course personal best on the tough, grueling Longwood Cross Country Course on Johnston Drive. The course debuted last year as the home course for the cross country teams.
In the women's race, Radford's women claimed the top seven spots, as the reigning Big South runners-up were led by freshman Sophie Magson's 18:35.3.
Caroline Fairbanks posted the top time for the Lancers, finishing eighth in the field with a 19:57.2 in the 5K.
Grace Puleo raced a 20:19.1, her best on Longwood's home course, to finish 10th, and Lanie Grogg was just 11 seconds behind her at 20:29.5.
Nicole Pinder (21:54.6), Bailey Deaver (21:58.4) provided the other scoring times for the Lancers, as Longwood finished second behind Radford.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"The women's race was amazing and a complete turnaround from last year," said Longwood head coach Brooke Craig. "We had a more competitive field, which was great, but our team responded. Our top three women went out with Radford. They have a little bit more depth than we do, but they went out and took a chance. Grace ran a course PR, and she won the race last year. So that tells you how fast the race was today. Caroline earned redemption for last year [when she sprained her ankle during the race] and came out and ran first for the team and broke 20 minutes. I loved the teamwork, and I'm excited for conference at the end of October."
"I'm so proud of the girls. I though we really packed up, and that's something we've been trying to work on in practice," Puleo said about how the team ran together as a group. "What we've been working on really played out. I thought it was awesome and a team effort. Everyone gave 100 percent."
"It means a lot," Puleo added about running a course PR on senior day at her home course. "This is something we have talked about hosting since my freshman year. Now it is normal for us to host one, and it looks and feels like a legit cross country race. We had all the support of people from the school and our families here, and it was so cool to see it. It was awesome. I loved being a part of it."
"It's incredible, what's been done in the past week when we started fundraising for this," Puleo said about how the team has raised close to $2,500. "We tabled on campus, and, on paper, we raised it, but it was everyone's donations to us for the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. It's really cool that we were able to get so many donations for such a good cause."
"It's amazing to see the turnout and also have an impact for the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation," Craig said. "We have a good connection with them, and we are going to continue raising money for them and having an impact."
"I love this team," Craig said. "I'm so lucky that I get to coach this group, and it was so much fun today."
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Kiersten Witte ran a course personal best at 22:13.3 and finished as Longwood's sixth runner.
Kathryn Oylear ran a 22:43.8, also a personal best on the course, as Longwood's seventh runner.
Rachel Simmons (23:28.8) and Aislinn Garcia (23:51.2) rounded out the field for Longwood.
