Repurposed Shorewood Golf Course is region’s first premiere cross-country course to be used by and shared with the local community
GREEN BAY – UW-Green Bay is excited to host the De Pere High School Cross-Country Invitational meet today, Thursday, Sept. 1st at its newly designed cross-country course. The invite will host 12 area schools; the JV girls are slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. with JV boys and varsity girls and boys to run afterwards. The course takes runners through the woods and rolling hills of the former Shorewood Golf Course, with the start and finish lines located near the new Shorewood Center for Outdoor Adventure Recreation and Student Engagement.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to develop a course that truly showcases the beauty of this campus,” said Mike Kline, UW-Green Bay cross-country coach and assistant athletic director for academic services. “I’m incredibly thankful this is available for our student athletes and the community.”
The development of the cross-country course speaks to the university’s continued commitment to meet the needs of the community. The closing of the on-campus 9-hole golf course presented an opportunity for the university to further engage the region by repurposing the space to be more widely used. UW-Green Bay’s regional focus on inclusivity in higher education, access for all, sustainability and sharing space with the community, are high priority for the leadership of the university. Plans include utilizing the space for a winter Nordic ski trail for community use and university athletics program, and UW-Green Bay is slated to host the 2024 Horizon League Cross-Country Championships. Community members are welcome now to walk or run on the course and enjoy its beauty.
“Our athletics programs are some of the first exposure that people have of the university, and it can be transformational,” said Josh Moon, UW-Green Bay director of athletics. “The new course will allow both college and high school student athletes to train and compete at a higher level and provide a community gathering point to enjoy the outdoors and expose others to the gorgeous outdoor space that UW-Green Bay has to offer.”
UW-Green Bay will host 14 schools for the St. Norbert Invite on Saturday, Sept. 3rd, gun goes off at 11:00 a.m. On Friday, Sept. 9th the UW-Green Bay cross-country team hosts the Green Bay Phoenix Open beginning at 4 p.m.
