The Match 5 between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau on Friday will likely be the shortest event in this series, scheduled to go just 12 holes, but it could also be the most contentious. While some of the antagonism between DeChambeau and Koepka is certainly manufactured (and has been specifically manufactured with this eventual outcome in mind), there is also the very real sense that they are not tremendously fond of one another.
I'm interested to see how that dynamic plays out on Friday at the Wynn Golf Club on Friday in Las Vegas, and even more interested to see how broadcasters Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley perceive, interpret and present their feud. Koepka has not played very good golf since the Ryder Cup while DeChambeau has not played any competitive golf at all, unless you count the World Long Drive Championship. He finished seventh in that competition the week after the Ryder Cup, where he was teammates with Koepka.
The pair has been touting this Friday's event as a type of grudge match, but I'm dubious about the animosity rising above a dull dim as they both make money on this appearance and raise it for charity. Any genuine settling of the score will only happen when they're paired together in a tumultuous traipse toward a major championship trophy. Still, there's the off chance we get some "hits closer to home than he meant it to" comments on Friday, and some good golf as a side dish as well.
