Fourth Quarter

SCORE: North Carolina State 41, Syracuse 17

3:45: Christopher Dunn hits a 21-yard chip shot. Orange trail by 24.

5:40: North Carolina State using a lot of misdirection as the Orange tries to desperately get to the passer. They’re inside the Syracuse red zone and are looking to push their lead to four scores.

SCORE: North Carolina State 38, Syracuse 17

8:45: There’s one. Quarterback Garrett Shrader gets loose and runs 48 yards down the sideline.

9:04: Syracuse’s defense gets a stop. The Orange takes over on the NC State side of the field (48) but with little reason to think it can score four touchdowns.

11:49: Syracuse moves into NC State territory but faces a 2nd-and-20 following a holding penalty Orange currently at the NC State 37. The drive ends on a sack, NC State’s sixth of the day, that the Orange couldn’t stop despite committing a holding penalty. The Orange will punt and this game feels very much over.

Third Quarter

SCORE: North Carolina State 38, Syracuse 10

2:15: NC State runs a little touch pass from Devin Leary to wide receiver Thayer Thomas coming back across the line in motion. Goes down as an 8-yard pass play for a touchdown, although it was really more of a run.

2:34: NC State responds to Syracuse quickly. Andre Szmyt kicked the kickoff out of bounds, followed by a 19-yard run by Zonovan Knight. The Wolfpack got an 18-yard pass to convert a 3rd-and-4 into the Syracuse red zone and now sit on the SU 8.

SCORE: North Carolina State 31, Syracuse 10

6:41: Andre Szmyt connects from 45 yards as Syracuse cuts the NC State lead to 21.

9:23: Syracuse’s Sean Tucker goes over 100 yards on the game with a 16-yard run, following by a personal foul penalty. An 8-yard sack by linebacker Devon Betty drives the Orange back to the NC State 33-yard line, where the Orange faces 3rd-and-18.

SCORE: North Carolina State 31, Syracuse 7

10:46: North Carolina State’s short drive after a 3-and-out results in a 37-yard field goal by Christopher Dunn. The Wolfpack only needed to go 22 yards to set up the score.

13:12 Syracuse had a chance to make a rare big play on offense on its first drive of the second half but Garrett Shrader badly underthrew DeVaughn Cooper on a rollout pass when the SU receiver was wide open.

Now, North Carolina State has the ball on the Orange side of the field.

Halftime: NC State 28, Syracuse 7

NC State scores 28 second-quarter points, including touchdowns in all three phases of the game, to take a comfortable lead into the locker room.

The Wolfpack kicked off the scoring after a couple explosive plays led to the game’s first score.

NC State also got a pick-six and answered the Orange’s only touchdown on the ensuing kickoff with a 97-yard return.

At the end of the half, the Wolfpack drove 80 yards on five plays in less than a minute, highlighted by a couple of big-time throws by quarterback Devin Leary, who finished 9-for-14 for 191 yards and a touchdown in the half.

Second quarter

0:29: Duce Chestnut late to cover up Thayer Thomas in the back of the end zone. The pass was a smidge high, allowing Chestnut the time needed to recover and help break up the pass.

Leary scrambles down to the 14-yard line with 17 seconds remaining. NC State calls its second timeout.

Naturally, Leary makes Syracuse pay. Kingsley Jonathan had a shot at hitting the quarterback on the next play, but Leary escaped left and fired a dart to Chris Toudle in the back of the end zone — behind another receiving target — for the touchdown.

SCORE UPDATE: NC STATE 28, SYRACUSE 7 with 8 seconds remaining in the second quarter

1:05: Roscoe actually beat Ikwonu on an inside move to pressure Leary, but the NC State quarterback delivered a 58-yard pass under duress to Devin Carter down to the Syracuse 19-yard line.

An absolute gut-check play late in the first half that might put this one all but on ice going into the locker room.

1:13: Syracuse uses a lot of clock before Shrader’s pass falls incomplete looking for Courtney Jackson.

Syracuse will punt, and NC State will take over at its own 20-yard line with 1:05 remaining and all three timeouts.

2:56: Shrader scrambles for a first down to move the ball out near midfield. A couple of huge collisions at the end of the play. Alford absorbed a big hit over the middle. Bergeron involved in a post-play scrap.

Clock ticking under 2 minutes. Babers has two timeouts remaining.

3:01: Zonovan Knight answers with a 97-yard return touchdown on the ensuing kickoff to quash momentum.

Just. Like. That.

SCORE UPDATE: NC STATE 21, SYRACUSE 7 with 3:01 remaining in the second quarter

5:25: A kickoff out of bounds gives SU its best starting field position of the half at its own 35-yard line.

Tucker gets a big block from Shrader to get the edge, and his speed is enough to run past the defender’s last-ditch angle to coast for a 55-yard touchdown.

Syracuse’s boom-or-bust offense gets six on the board before the end of the half; four plays, 65 yards in a little more than 2 minutes of game time.

SCORE UPDATE: NC STATE 14, SYRACUSE 7 with 3:16 remaining in the second drive

6:07: Cooper Lutz’s breaks off a 32-yard kick return on a fake reverse.

SU squanders the return two plays later when Drake Thomas intercepts Shrader and returns it 38 yards for a touchdown.

SCORE UPDATE: NC STATE 14, SYRACUSE 0 with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter

7:13: Thayer Thomas ignites the crowd with a 49-yard completion with Simmons in coverage. Leary’s ability to hit the deep ball is the stark difference between the two offenses tonight.

Ricky Person bounces it outside off the left side for a 15-yard touchdown run to break a scoreless tie.

SCORE UPDATE: NC STATE 7, SYRACUSE 0 with 6:14 remaining in the second quarter.

8:19: Both offenses have combined for 148 yards of offense midway through the second quarter.

Syracuse has just 41 of those, continuing a troubling trend of not being able to the move the ball.

Half of its first downs came on NC State penalties on one drive. Tucker’s runs on the previous drive, including the record-breaker, account for two more.

Shrader is 3-for-7 for 13 yards.

Woof.

11:08: Tucker breaks off a couple long runs to break Joe Morris’s single-season rushing record.

Tucker got it after a 10-yard gain and then a 17-yard run off the right side. Both went for first downs.

Tucker is up to 27 yards on four carries, but SU’s drive stalls out around midfield, and Syracuse will punt it back to NC State.

On the bench, Tucker is getting some fist bumps by his offensive linemen.

15:00: Well-called screen to Zonovan Knight goes for a chunk gain of 26 yards out across midfield.

Syracuse gets home on Leary, who was patient hanging onto the ball. Cody Roscoe brings him down, with McKinley Williams in on the play as well.

Garrett Williams back on the field for this 3rd-and-10. NC State’s Chris Toudle gets flagged for illegal touching, resulting in loss of down and 4th-and-10 from the SU 41-yard line coming up.

NC State will punt.

First quarter

0:40: Cornerback Garrett Williams nearly pulls down an incredible interception but landed hard and is getting attention by the trainers on the field.

The absence of Williams would loom large in this one with NC State’s passing game. Adrian Cole in the game.

Leary with plenty of green space to chew up on 3rd-and-10. He picks up 13 with his feet as the first quarter comes to a close.

2:52: Syracuse goes for negative yards on back-to-back plays, bringing up 3rd-and-16.

This time, no penalty and no conversion.

Syracuse will punt on 4th-and-17 from the NC State 36-yard line after NC State declined taking the delay of game penalty.

Ball is downed at the 6-yard line inside a minute to play in the opening quarter.

Tucker now needs 14 yards to break Morris’s record.

5:33: A holding penalty on Matt Bergeron sets SU back to the NC State 46-yard line.

A swing pass to Tucker is gobbled up by the Wolfpack, bringing up another 3rd-and-long after a false start by Ilaoa, who is making his first start at left guard.

On 3rd-and-20, Shrader finds Damien Alford for a 16-yard gain. Syracuse will go for it.

On 4th-and-4, Syracuse will get its third first down of the drive on an NC State penalty — this one a defensive pass interference penalty on Porter Rooks.

7:42: Syracuse is gifted a first down after a personal foul (hands-to-the-facemask) by Daniel Joseph trying to sack Garrett Shrader.

Tucker’s is dropped for a 3-yard loss on his first carry of the game.

On 3rd-and-13, a snap gets away from Shrader, but he is bailed out by a late hit out of bounds while attempting to just throw the ball away.

Another big first down gifted to the Orange.

9:21: Rob Hanna rips the ball away from Ricky Person, but the officials ruled his forward progress was stopped before the fumble.

Josh Black is down on the field after the play. Kingsley Jonathan runs over to check on his fellow senior. Black walks off on his own power but tosses his helmet onto the bench as the medical tent pops up overhead.

NC State is stopped on 4th-and-2, and Syracuse’s defense comes away with a huge turnover on downs. Mikel Jones and Jonathan made the hit.

10:20: Josh Ilaoa starts at left guard for the Orange, with Darius Tisdale at right tackle.

Syracuse goes three-and-out on three dropbacks. Ian Hawkins punts it away, and NC State will start at the SU 37-yard line.

Sean Tucker still needs 11 yards to break the school’s single-season rushing record.

15:00: Syracuse’s defense opens up with Jason Simmons Jr., Ja’Had Carter and Justin Barron joining Duce Chestnut and Garrett Williams in the secondary. Regular starters in the defensive front for the Orange.

Devin Leary finds Thayer Thomas to convert a 3rd-and-6 in front of the SU bench. Leary has had a clean pocket early and able to go through this reads.

Leary’s deep pass down the middle to Emeka Emezie is broken up by Chestnut.

A false start penalty on Ikem Ekwonu on 4th-and-short brings on the punt team.

Pregame notes

Syracuse won the coin toss and will defer possession until the second half.

Good afternoon from Carter-Finley Stadium, where Syracuse and NC State will face off at 4 p.m.

Syracuse offensive lineman Chris Bleich is here after missing last week’s game at Louisville. Bleich’s return could be a boon for a unit that has had multiple players in and out of the lineup this season and help the running game regain its form.

Both punters are also here after starter James Williams did not make last week’s trip to Louisville for health-related reasons.
