With top wide receiver Calvin Ridley missing his third straight game and fourth in five weeks, Atlanta’s receivers struggled to contribute against Dallas, combining to catch three passes for 36 yards. Starter Russell Gage was held without a catch for the second time in three weeks despite playing 35 snaps, the highest of any of the team’s skill-position players.
“We have to do a better job than we did today of creating separation and being accurate with the ball and protecting,” Matt Ryan said. “Whether it’s man or zone, we have to do a better job.”
After Sunday’s results, it’s probably going to be a lot more man, which is a problem for Atlanta. The Falcons are averaging 4.69 yards per play against man defense this season compared with 5.87 versus zone, according to TruMedia. Against man, they are completing 60.9 percent of their passes. Against zone, 72.4 percent.
