Disc golf enthusiasts now have a second course in Savannah to test their skills thanks to officials at Georgia Southern University.
On Tues., Nov 9, students, faculty, and the general public joined Georgia Southern for the ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration of the new course, which is located behind the intramural fields on Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus in the wooded area near the tennis complex. The course is now open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public free of charge from sunrise to sunset every day.
Sean Willett, assistant director of Intramurals and Club Sports on the Armstrong Campus, proposed the project as he considered new activities to offer students while indoor recreation wasn’t possible due to COVID-19 precautions. Willett and his team hope the new course will open the door to new activities for students, as well as provide them with an opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules.
“We really wanted to be able to offer a course where any student who wanted to jump out there could,” Willett said. “The woods are very serene, so it gives you time to get away from things, de-stress and relax. We want students to go out there, have a good time and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.”
According to Megan Feasel, director of Intramurals and Club Sports, the new 9-hole disc golf course gives players two playing options in the form of a short course and a long course and each hole has two tee pads allowing players options to play each course independently or mix and match for a full 18-hole round. A practice area is also available to allow for warm up before hitting the course.
“We are looking forward to adding another exciting engagement opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to take advantage of at our beautiful campus,” Feasel said. “With nine baskets and 18 tee pads, short and long throws, this course can be enjoyed by anyone at a recreational or competitive level. It’s something new, something different and something to embrace as this is only the second disc golf course in Savannah!
With the addition of the new course, Feasel says they’ve received a lot of positive feedback and formed a new Club Sports team.
“When the course was being designed, we had a student (Matthew Mahoney) that was interested in starting a club,” she said. “Sean Willett worked with him to get all paperwork completed and approved. Our grand opening brought out many students and 8-10 of them joined the club.”
The university’s new disc golf club will be led by coach and Georgia Southern staff member Wes Johnson who is also a disc golf sponsored athlete.
“Wes is very connected in the Disc Golf world and is a high level competitor,” Feasel said. “His connections will bring a lot of positive outcomes to our club and university. We are excited that we have a new Club Sports team that was developed from the course and we look forward to having tournaments and competitions.”
