After backing down a defender in the lane for an easy first-half score, Gonzaga big man Drew Timme celebrated by putting his hand near the court as he ran down the floor, a motion that in layman's terms translates to calling the Texas defender guarding him too little. That was a theme of Saturday night's first half between No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 5 Texas as the Bulldogs brutalized the visiting Longhorns to take a 47-27 (!) lead into the break.
Timme, the CBS Sports Preseason National Player of the Year, appropriately paced Gonzaga with a team-high 22 points in the opening half as he hit nine of his 10 shot attempts. With 20 minutes left of action left, he's only eight points shy of tying a career-high in scoring.
While Timme is the only player on either team to reach double figures, both teams got a balanced effort with Timmy Allen leading the way for Texas with seven points.
Gonzaga is aces at home in The Kennel so it'd be a surprise -- no, a stunner -- if it were to blow the lead given its history there and how the first half transpired. But we should be in for a fun finish nonetheless in a rocking environment.
