The United States women's national team are squaring off against the Netherlands at the International Stadium Yokohama in Japan in a rematch of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup final. The two teams are in extra time after a wild first half the United States went down early but fought back to take a 2-1 lead into the second half where Netherlands equalized and had a chance to win it late on a penalty which Alyssa Naeher saved. This is the ninth meeting overall (Team USA with the 8-1-0 series edge), with the lone loss to the Dutch coming back in 1991, a 4-3 defeat in their first-ever clash. Since then, the Americans have won the last eight, though each of the last five meetings has been decided by just two goals.
The Dutch enter the quarterfinals having scored 21 goals in three Olympic group stage matches, and their star striker Vivianne Miedema added to her lead in the Golden Boot race with two goals taking her tally to ten. The United States is coming off a scoreless draw against Australia, but have already been far more lethal in the attack after being shut out twice in the group stage.
