Marcus Stroman gave up eight hits over five innings of streaky work to the Pirates lineup but limited the damage to two runs. The Mets offense was not up to the task against a struggling Chad Kuhl, however, as the team dropped a 4-1 game Friday night in Pittsburgh. The Mets scored their only run in a hitless fourth inning and failed to record a hit with a runner in scoring position all game.
Making matters worse, Francisco Lindor left the game in the top of the fifth, grabbing his right side after a groundout to second base in what the team is calling “right side soreness.” The bottom of the fifth provided the most exciting sequence of events, with Ben Gamel running himself into an out between first and second and Stroman forcing a Nogowski lineout to end his night. Stroman and Nogowski jawed at each other after as the teams were switching sides, prompting the benches to clear and some shoving to transpire, though no serious fight broke out.
Drew Smith and Jeurys Familia gave up a home run to Wilmer Difo and Bryan Reynolds in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, pushing the score to 4-1. Even J.D. Davis returning in a pinch-hit spot in the top of the seventh inning couldn’t lift the lineup out of its funk. The Mets offense showed a lot of fight late in difficult games throughout the first half of the season, but looked awfully punchless throughout the night with only three hits against one of the worst teams in baseball.
