After a stirring last inning comeback in the final inning of game one of the day/night double header in the Bronx gave the Mets a series victory in the first installment of the 2021 Subway Series, all of the momentum seemed to be on the Mets’ side heading into the series finale.
The opportunity to sweep the series and push the Yankees below .500 would slip through the Mets’ fingers, however. The offense that put up 18 runs over the first two games of the series started slowly against Nestor Cortes. Meanwhile, the Yankees struck quickly in the second inning, with Gio Urshela putting a three run home run into the short porch in right to stake the Yankees to a 3-0 lead.
The Mets got within one in the fourth on a Pete Alonso two-run home run, but that would be as close as they would get. Aaron Loup and Miguel Castro’s wildness combined to allow a big insurance run to the Yankees the fifth, and Chad Green would provide rare solid relief in the series for the beleaguered Yankee bullpen, striking out six in three perfect innings to prevent another Mets comeback and salvage the series finale for the Yankees.
