For their next trick …
The Cubs notched loss number ten – in a row, not on the season – tonight by virtue of extreme middle reliever wildness and, once again, a lack of offense. Oh, and it featured another 8th inning implosion with multiple gaffes by Eric Sogard (who wound up pitching for the FIFTH time this season and fourth time in the last 15 games, and he also got crushed).
As usual, if the Cubs had scored some more runs earlier on and if the starter had gone a little deeper, the bullpen structure plays out differently. That’s not to excuse Rex Brothers and Adam Moran and Kohl Stewart for struggling, but it’s more just to point out how this kind of loss keeps happening.
If you need to take away something positive – which may or may not matter anyway – Javy Báez’s plate appearances tonight *looked* fantastic. Not just the excellent results, but how he looked up there. Night and day from his recent stretch. Just looked like he was actually tracking pitches so well for the first time in weeks.
Zach Davies mostly did as Zach Davies does, giving the Cubs five passable innings (two solo homers). Some days he’ll be slightly better. Most days he’ll be like that. Some days he’ll be much worse. To be honest, we’re to the point where we have to view these starts within a “does he look like an interesting trade piece” paradigm, and I think – given the market for starting pitchers – yeah, Davies probably did his job tonight in that respect.
Lost by 10 to bring the losing streak to 10. Poetry.
