Texas cities score top two spots in annual ranking of strongest hubs for tech jobs - The Dallas Morning News

Dallas leapfrogged six tech-centric American cities to rank second in CompTIA’s annual Tech Town Index of the strongest job centers in the U.S. for technology jobs in 2020.

The Austin-Round Rock metro area held on to its first-place ranking in the CompTIA index, but Dallas-Fort Worth made the biggest jump of any city, rising from seventh last year to second this year, according to the nonprofit global technology industry association.

North Texas boasted nearly 180,000 information technology jobs in the last year with a median salary of $94,044, and job growth in the sector is expected to surge a “whopping” 11% in the next five years, according to CompTIA.

Dallas' tech growth has been focused on web, mobile application and software development.

"The conventional technology enterprises have set the tone for the Dallas tech scene while emerging technology companies are taking it to the next level,” CompTIA notes in the report.

The 2020 report marks the third year for CompTIA’s Tech Town Index, which aims to be a resource for employers and workers searching for the intersection of opportunity and affordability. The nonprofit analyzed job posting data from August 2019 through July 2020 in 20 metropolitan areas with populations over 250,000 where “demand for tech workers is greatest.”

Which companies were the largest IT job creators in the Dallas area in the last year?

Banks and financial firms were some of the top employers on CompTIA’s list, which includes Lockheed Martin, JPMorgan Chase, USAA, Citi, Deloitte, Verizon, Wells Fargo, IBM, NTT Data and InfoVision.

CompTIA said there were 178,579 IT jobs posted in North Texas in the previous 12 months — up from 146,388 for the same period a year earlier.

“With the cost of living 2% lower than the U.S. average, more and more young people are putting down roots in this area,” according to the report.

In Austin, companies bulking up on IT pros include IBM, Dell, Home Depot, Deloitte, Charles Schwab, Amazon, Apple, Advanced Micro Devices, Visa and Accenture.

The COVID-19 pandemic also played a big role in the IT job picture this year.

“During COVID-19, the demand for remote IT workers has increased with the number of job postings nearly doubling,” the report said.

From August 2018 to July 2019, only about 10% of IT jobs were labeled as remote or work from home. But from August 2019 to July 2020, that jumped to 21%, or nearly 800,000 jobs nationwide that could be done fully or partly remotely.

“Ultimately, it’s difficult to predict how the circumstances of 2020 will affect the technology industry in the years ahead,” the report said. “However, ... IT pros are in demand and have more options than ever before when choosing where to live and work.”
