Taulia Tagovailoa's tenure as Maryland's quarterback got off to a rough start when the Alabama transfer struggled in the Terrapins' season-opening blowout loss to Northwestern two weeks ago. But Tagovailoa has been rolling since and has helped carry Maryland to a 28-7 lead over Penn State in Happy Valley on Saturday.
The younger brother of former Alabama star and current Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa went 14-of-19 passing in the first half with 246 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as the Nittany Lions struggled to contain a Maryland attack that outlasted Minnesota 45-44 in overtime last week.
Penn State's porous first-half defense has put it at risk of falling to 0-3 for the first time since 2001. But allowing 335 yards in the first half to Maryland was just one of the Nittany Lions' issues as quarterback Sean Clifford struggled to get anything going against a Maryland defense that was subpar in its first two games. Clifford completed just 6 of 20 passes for 78 yards in the first half. Holding on for a win would be especially meaningful to Maryland considering Penn State won 59-0 last season, 38-3 in 2018 and 66-3 in 2017 throughout their last three meetings.
