CLASS 5A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 2 Ankeny 3, No. 5 Iowa City Liberty 1 (25-21, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19)
Maybe some of it was the residual effect of an emotional match the previous day.
Most of it, though, was Ankeny.
The second-ranked Hawkettes put a big block on Iowa City Liberty’s front line and topped the No. 5 Lightning to win the Class 5A state volleyball championship.
“The game plan for me and Aowyn (Schrader) was to block line on (Liberty’s Cassidy Hartman),” said Ankeny’s Phyona Schrader, the all-tournament captain. “Our blocking has been solid all season.”
Ankeny won its fifth championship, its first since the school split with Ankeny Centennial.
“I wasn’t thinking about the program, the past or the future,” said Schrader, a Notre Dame commit. “I was thinking of now, and this team.”
The Hawkettes finished 22-2.
Liberty (24-3) is in its fourth year of existence. The Lightning were making their second straight state appearance and was in the championship match for the first time.
“We played way more defense than we wanted to play,” Liberty Coach Randy Dolson said. “Ankeny is big, the tallest team we’ve faced all year.”
Coming off a grueling five-set victory over No. 1 West Des Moines Dowling in the semifinals, the Lightning were on their heels through the first two sets.
“It was hard to find holes against them,” said Hartman, who followed Wednesday’s 35-kill masterpiece with 18 kills Thursday. “We came out a little nervous. At the end, we wanted to give it our all and end on a good note. I think we did that.”

CLASS 4A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 3, No. 8 West Delaware 0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-18)
Their legacy is secure. Their resume is complete.
The seniors from top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier fulfilled their destiny Thursday afternoon, completing a week of domination with a sweep of No. 8 West Delaware in the Class 4A state volleyball championship match.
“We all wanted to leave a legacy, leave no doubt,” Eve Magill said. “There’s no better way to end it than with a state title.”
Along with Jazmine Yamilkoski and Katy Garrison, Magill has been a cornerstone for the Saints for four years. The run ended in triumph.
“I’m just really happy,” said Yamilkoski, the all-tournament captain. “We’ve been working hard for this for a long time. This is what we’ve wanted since my freshman year.”
Xavier (26-6) did not drop a set in the postseason and earned the Metro’s first championship since Marion captured the 3A crown in 2008.
“The kids hit a wall in which they weren’t going to leave anything to chance,” said Coach Austin Filer, who has led five straight teams to state.
“This isn’t real for me yet. Every headache and every bit of adversity is worth it right now.”
West Delaware (29-12) was somewhat of a surprise finalist. The Hawks traditionally play at a whirlwind of a pace, but the Saints were ready for it.

CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 1 Osage 3, No. 3 Mount Vernon 0 (25-6, 25-17, 25-20)
There were no decisions to second-guess, no moments or actions to regret.
The truth for the Mount Vernon Mustangs was simple: Osage was better.
“They played amazing,” Mount Vernon’s Lauren Schrock said. “We expected them to be amazing, and I don’t think we responded to it the way we wanted.”
Osage put its foot on the collective gas pedal the moment it left the parking lot, and left it there all match. The top-ranked Green Devils dethroned No. 3 Mount Vernon with precision and gusto for the Class 3A state volleyball championship.
“That’s probably the best volleyball we’ve ever played,” Osage’s Paige Kisley said. “We’ve been dreaming about this forever, and we took care of business.”
Osage (34-2) was making its 15th state appearance. This was its first championship, and the Green Devils left no doubt.
“We were totally prepared. We knew their tendencies,” Mount Vernon Coach Maggie Willems said. “But we couldn’t respond consistently enough to be successful.
“That’s a team that doesn’t give you a break, and our serve didn’t do enough to disrupt them, so they could have their pick of swings.”
The first set was as one-sided as the score indicates. Mount Vernon (32-7) scored the first point on an ace by Jorie Randall, but Osage had scoring runs of four, nine and 10 points. The Green Devils scored 14 kills (six by Danielle Johnson) and posted a .542 kill efficiency, compared to minus-.129 for the Mustangs.
“Everybody showed up with their ‘A’ game today,” said Johnson, the all-tournament captain. “We knew Mount Vernon would come back strong with everything they had, so we had to keep our momentum rolling.”

CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 3 Dike-New Hartford 3, No. 6 Denver 0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-15)
The gap between Dike-New Hartford and the rest of the Class 2A state-tournament field proved to be wide.
The only real debate is this:
Which is brighter? The Wolverines’ tradition? Or their immediate future?
Third-ranked DNH swept its third consecutive match of the week, dropping No. 6 Denver for the 2A state volleyball championship.
Now, that’s an answer after a rare tournament absence last year.
“Any time you get down here, it’s an awesome feeling,” DNH Coach Diane Harms said. “Our girls just keep fighting and finding ways to be successful.”
The Wolverines (32-4) didn’t face much adversity in their three matches here. In only one of their nine sets did their opponent score in the 20s.
“We were fired up and determined, and brought a lot of energy,” said freshman Payton Petersen, named the all-tournament captain after a 17-kill, 10-dig performance.
The title is the 14th for Dike-New Hartford (including five for Dike). Barb Bakker won seven, and now so has Harms.
Don’t be surprised if this is the start of a title string. The Wolverines’ starting lineup consists of three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen.
