High school football: Litchfield Dragons score early, often - West Central Tribune

The bad news: the Dragons were pinned at their own 4-yard line with less than 90 seconds remaining in the first half of their game against New London-Spicer.

The good news: Litchfield’s dynamic offense is hard to slow down.

In less than 60 seconds, the Dragons raced down the field. After Michels made a pair of grabs near the sideline and senior wide receiver Bennett Lecher hauled in two catches in the middle of the field, senior quarterback Ben Alsleben capped the 96-yard drive with a 5-yard scamper through the Wildcats defense and into the end zone.

Litchfield went into halftime up 25-6 before coming away with a 39-12 road win on Thursday during a East Central District South Division game from Pederson Field.

Michels and Lecher each finished with more than 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Alsleben had a hand in all six Dragons touchdowns. He was 12-for-20 passing for 238 yards and added 75 yards on nine rushes. Senior running back Drew Kotzer had 11 carries for 90 yards.

The visitors went up 12-0 in the first quarter following a pair of beautiful Alsleben throws. First, Alsleben found Lecher with a perfect back-shoulder throw on a 21-yard scoring hookup. Then, after senior defensive lineup Maison Olson picked off a batted pass from NLS junior quarterback Kyle Doty, the Litchfield signal caller delivered a dime into double coverage to Michels for a 25-yard touchdown reception.

The Wildcats responded on their first drive of the second quarter. After key third-down receptions from senior wide receiver Tyler Danielson and senior tight end Mason Toutges, senior running back Jack Novak picked up a key first down following a rush on 4th-and-1. Later in the drive, Novak put the home team on the board with a 6-yard run.

Litchfield countered less than two minutes later after Alsleben ran in a 15-yard quarterback keeper to make it 19-6.

Alsleben tacked on two passing touchdowns in the third quarter with a 33-yard pass to Michels and a 19-yard connection to Lecher.

Michels had six grabs for 123 yards. Lecher finished with five catches for 101 receiving yards.
